Stages of change
A model of how people move towards changing a habit: not yet considering it, thinking about it, preparing, taking action, then keeping it going. Slip-ups are treated as a normal part.
In the room
A counsellor might first gauge where someone sits, since a person still weighing things up needs a different conversation from someone ready to act.
Something a client might say
“Part of me wants to quit smoking, but part of me really isn't ready.”
An illustrative line, not a real client.
Where it comes from
The stages of change, or transtheoretical model, was developed by James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente.
