Drive and motivation
A drive is an inner push towards meeting a need, such as hunger pushing you to eat. Classic theories suggested that much behaviour aims to ease the discomfort of an unmet need and restore balance.
In the room
People often notice that poor sleep, skipped meals or low mood quietly sap their get up and go, and therapists may look at these basics before anyone assumes laziness.
Something a client might say
“Once I started sleeping properly, I actually wanted to get things done again.”
An illustrative line, not a real client.
Where it comes from
Drive reduction theory is associated with the psychologist Clark Hull.
