Hope
The expectation that things can get better and that you have some way of getting there. Counselling research treats a client's hope, and the counsellor's ability to nurture it, as one of the shared factors that helps therapy work.
In the room
A counsellor might point out small changes a client has already made, helping them see that progress is possible even when things feel stuck.
Something a client might say
“For the first time in months, I can picture next spring and it looks okay.”
An illustrative line, not a real client.
Where it comes from
Psychologist C. R. Snyder developed an influential hope theory built on goals, pathways and agency thinking.
